King's Academy Opportunity Fund

About the Opportunity Fund

Our organization was formed as the Class of 1980 Association, an all-volunteer effort which raised funds in increments from $10 to over $100,000 from individual members of Deerfield Academy’s Great Class of 1980, as well as family members, friends, corporate matches, and in-kind contributions.

In 2012, the Association distributed over $600,000 to King’s Academy to begin our Opportunity Scholarship program. At that point, the Association recognized the opportunity to expand its scope and make an even bigger impact on the education and lives of young people. From this growing scope emerged the King’s Academy Opportunity Fund.

What We Do

The mission of The King’s Academy Opportunity Fund is: To enrich the global community by upholding the mission of King’s Academy through support of students with great promise and modest means.

Our goals are not to build a library or fund a massive new program, but instead to focus on individual students directly by:

+ Providing full-ride scholarships – covering all costs – for hard-working, capable students who fit our “great promise / modest means” criteria

+ Assisting students seeking summer internships, US-based assistance with the college process, and

+ Supporting post-graduate networking and employment opportunities for KA alumni.

Accomplishments / Scholarships

In October 2018, the Opportunity Fund board traveled to Jordan to celebrate the school’s 10th anniversary and select a new Opportunity Fund Scholar. We are proud to announce the unanimous selection of Ibrahim A___, a war refugee whose family moved from Iraq to Syria then to Jordan. He has found nothing but obstacles in his young life, including missing school for more than 2 years. But he has persevered and now has found stability at King’s Academy. Ibrahim is currently a senior, applying for colleges in the US and Europe, a proctor on a corridor of sophomore boys, and carrying a full load of academic courses and extra curricular activities. When told of his selection, Ibrahim wrote: “I cannot express my gratitude enough to you and to your fellow board members for granting me this scholarship, which will not only be financial support, but will also provide me with further motive to excel in my future. I’m honored to carry the banner.”

Our first Opportunity Fund Scholar, Sirina A___, is now a proud graduate of the King’s Academy Class of 2017, and attends the University of Brighton in the UK. She was chosen from a very competitive field of boys and girls fitting the Foundation’s criteria. Sirina came to King’s Academy from Lady of Nazareth College in Amman (previously called the Sisters of Nazareth School), where she was first in her class, and had aspirations to become a doctor. Her teachers were extremely supportive and complimentary of her hard work and determination. One said, “Sirina is one of my hardest working, most earnest students. Her growth this year has been nothing short of sensational. She has been working exceptionally hard since the day she arrived at King’s Academy. I am looking forward to all the big things that lie ahead for our Scholar, and I am thrilled that I get to continue to help her on this journey.” Said another, “Sirina is a true lover of learning and I can see her soaking up experiences wherever she goes. Her positivity and drive helps her to thrive in all of her courses”. Sirina was active outside the classroom as well, enjoying piano, dance, soccer, basketball, badminton and varsity basketball.
